What Do Your Parents and Grandparents Want to Hear from You?

In Being a Distance Grandparent I explain to the grandparents that their Distance Sons and Daughters want to hear them regularly verbalise how proud they are of them and all they’ve achieved.

Distance Daughter Rhoda Bangerter read one of my early drafts, and one of her responses was: “What do parents and grandparents want to hear [from their distance adult children]?” That’s an excellent question, so here are some suggestions.

•“I love you and miss you.” (They are tough and can hack it.)

•“I understand this is hard/inconvenient/unfair for you, but I appreciate your support.”

•“I would like to spend some time with just you.”

•“I know the kids aren’t great at communicating. Thanks for your patience – maybe next time.”

•“Here are some online kid present ideas to make shopping easier.”

•“When you come (or we come), what are a few things you really want to tick off?”

•“When you come (or we come), please speak up if we’re too rowdy or you’ve had enough. I know you’re not used to little ones, and I want you to speak up.”

•“I won’t be late.”

•“I’m paying for this.”
